Wishful Singing All-time High (Reloaded)

Source: last.fm

Perhaps it is one of the catchiest songs in History. A marketing volunteerism show was carried out with meager results, almost insignificant compared to the energy dedicated. It would be Pareto’s law in reverse: 80% effort to obtain 20% outcomes. It was the height of inefficiency and ineffectiveness, but sticky as tree sap.

I’m talking about We Are the World. Tune that I enjoy and know almost by heart. I remember the video clip full of famous singers (and Dan Aykroyd?) that was the zenith of stars per square meter of the eighties.

There comes a time when we heed a certain call

When the world must come together as one

There are people dying

Oh, and it’s time to lend a hand to life

The greatest gift of all

We can’t go on pretending day by day

That someone, somewhere will soon make a change

We are all part of God’s great big family

And the truth, you know, love is all we need

There comes a time when we heard a certain call

Who or what calls? If it is something, it must be universal. It must be something univocal and clear, understandable beyond words and language. It must be instinctive and prehuman.

If it’s someone then we are in trouble because we must answer. We can ignore that call we heed, but in the long run it does not suit us. Not because that someone who calls is spiteful but because we will have lost valuable time to act. And that is to our own detriment. There are no scapegoats or excuses, or another culprit other than the bad decision itself. Whether due to laziness, vanity, indifference or disinterest, the call cries out for an answer.

When do you receive the call? When the moment arrives, at the day and the appointed hour. No one knows when, but we all got that call.

When the world must come together as one

The phone has been ringing for a long time. Two dozen singers raking in $150 million is not the answer the world needs to be one. It is a ‘desirable song’ a hiccup turned into an anthem to further increase the fame of the musicians. Their talent was as useful as hiring ten Komatsu cranes to build a children’s sandcastle on a beach. A true waste of self-pity and inbred hugs.

There are people dying

Of course! Every day more, it’s getting worse. Wars, famines, injustices, corruption… and a song that reminds us as if we didn’t know. How many dying Africans did USA for Africa rockstars shake hands with, help feed or accompany? I dare say none.

To sing that people die without a serious and permanent commitment to the cause is to spread twenty times more butter on a toast than it fits. The butter does not penetrate the crust of the bread no matter how much effort we perform. The superficial bashing of songs and irrelevant marketing actions is useless. To save people, it is necessary to truly approach the neighbor with love, even in the deepest and most respectful silence, without singing La Ti Do (A, B, C).

Oh, and it’s time to lend a hand to life, the greatest gift of all

It is true that life is the greatest gift that exists. Everything is built on it, and without it there is nothing else. We must give a hand to the Life that gave us life and give a hand to the life that is near and far from us so that they can continue enjoying that gift.

How can we give a hand? Holding the fight for those who need it most, even if it costs, even if the drive fades, even if we are left alone. We must have faith and hope in the acts of love that we perform without ceasing.

We can’t go on pretending day by day that someone, somewhere will soon make a change

Here we come to the zenith of voluntarism and ‘wishful singing’. It is true that we must start ourselves. It is true, real and evident. And this is the biggest problem of humanity. We believe that change can only be made by someone else. Someone capable, intelligent, charismatic, famous, strong or tenacious, well-connected or powerful. This is the biggest lie we have ever believed. If you are alive, it is because you have a mission for the world. It does not matter what it is, nor its size and scope, but at least one thing that does not work can be improved by you. This is so brutally real and obvious that it is surprising that it is not seen with the obvious clarity of a morning. Just as the sun rises, each and every one of us has a reason for being. And no one else can accomplish our task more than ourselves.

Someone, somewhere defined that individual capacity as something kitsch, honeyed, contrived and false, but it is as true as the air we breathe.

Better to wait for someone, somewhere to make a change soon and not depend on ourselves. And so, the days go by, day after day…

We are all part of God’s great big family

How true and at the same time rusty it is! We are brothers. Children of the same mother and the same father. Born to be happy despite suffering. Brothers with diverse gifts, different forms, disparate thoughts, but united by life and universal love. We don’t want to see it. We do not want to take charge of the other and the world. We don’t want to answer the call. We destroyed the family until there was nothing left but a museum artifact. The deep and absolute meaning of the bonding union governed by love was being forgotten, until it almost disappeared like a slowly fading ember.

And the truth, you know, love is all we need

Nothing more, nothing less. What is love? It is going beyond the limits of effort, of intellectual capacities, crossing the threshold of physical exhaustion, and continuing. It is stripping the soul. It is suffering patiently. It is giving more than you have. It is giving yourself completely to the mission and to your neighbor. It’s the most bastardized thing on the planet, devastated almost as much as Earth itself.

Loving is always something better. Regardless of the amount, or the successful results or the apparent failure. Love is so simple, but horribly convoluted by the human mind.

Truth, conscience, love and necessity. We must start with the truth to get to love. That’s the way! There is no other.
