There is No Lack of People Willing to Give Their Lives for Others!
The mysterious sacrifice of leaving everything, even the most precious — life — for others. No matter the age of the identity card, when the heart launches itself to love it is eternally young. In Spain or Argentina, for strangers or for the family, the total offering is unparalleled to nothing on this earth
I read the news in the newspaper: Shocking video: after four days of agony, a father died who had hugged his children to save them from a fire in Córdoba. Marcelo Cuevas was found clinging to two minors inside a burning room in the Ampliación Ferreyra neighborhood. The little ones were saved and the wife is still in very serious condition.
My mind inevitably went to that article by José Luis Martín Descalzo The year in which Christ died in the flames, in Reasons for Hope. The Spanish writer said that the sacrifice is not limited to a corner of history, but that in our sacrifices Christ continues his passion. He remembered the importance of giving one’s life for others. Leaving the skin for others. Unknown or known. The greatest superheroes in history are anonymous to the masses, but distinguished to the one with whom they complete their triduum.
The life of those who are in danger is worth more than their own. How does Marcelo Cuevas challenge us? What does his mirror say about us? What a big heart this baker had!
A generation capable of producing a single act like that cannot be corrupted; it is certainly not empty. Who loves so much, how to think that he was not — consciously or unconsciously — very close to Christ?, Descalzo continued, excited.
The freedom of those who take a risk without anyone forcing or pushing them to do so. The salvation of one who receives death at the same time that his two children, ages 2 and 4, have fled, thanks to him, from the flames. The world is much warmer than we imagined. It is not true that it is planted only with violence, with ambition for power. Also of love. And of love in freedom.
Fortunately, the man — every whole man — is longer and wider than his personal wishes. Fortunately, there is that mystery that we call love and that we only finish understanding when someone gives his life for it.
I am excited to read that more than 40 years apart, there still are people who give their lives for others.
